Barcelona’s new kit pays tribute to one historic team

So long horizontal stripes...

Ben Kiely

Barcelona have unveiled their new home kit for the 2016/17 season and it’s sure to please their die hard supporters.

There are two major changes to the shirt for the upcoming season – the stripes and the sponsor.

Barca have returned to the classic vertical blue and red stripes, after experimenting with a horizontal-striped design for the 2015/16 season.

There is also a large sponsor-shaped void on the front of the jersey as the club are reportedly locked in discussions over a new deal with Qatar Airways, but have yet to seal a new deal with the airline, whose contract with the club is set to expire in a month.

While it may look like a bog-standard, paint-by-numbers Barca kit, it is actually more than meets the eye.

The club explained that the “thinner tonal stripes taper near the hem in a style that honours the model worn by the team in the 1991/92 season, when the club won its first-ever European Cup at Wembley.”

Now you have some trivia to tell your friends in the pub, which will undoubtedly lead to them turning away from you and start talking to the far more interesting wall instead.
