Nobody can believe Spain lost to Georgia in their final game before Euro 2016

Awkward

Matt Tate

Spain were looking to complete their preparations for a potentially history-making Euro 2016 by routinely dispatching of Georgia – a country ranked 131 places below them in the world rankings.

But Vicente Del Bosque’s side had a night they will want to immediately forget, as they went down 1-0 in Getafe and Georgia wildy celebrated one of the greatest nights in their history.

The Spaniards can become the first team to win three consecutive European Championships in France this summer, which would go some way to making up for 2014’s World Cup horror show.

They’d been in good form until Tuesday night’s blip, with wins over Bosnia-Herzegovina and South Korea in the two prior warm-up fixtures.

But despite La Roja largely dominating proceedings – Sergio Ramos arrived too late to apply a finish to Gerard Pique’s flick and Thiago Alcantara saw his strike rattle the post just before the half-hour mark – Tornike Okriashvili’s goal just before half-time would be the only one of the game, and in terms of world rankings, it was Spain’s worst ever defeat.

Andres Iniesta and Nolito both came close to finding an equaliser after the break but Georgia held on for the remainder of half – as well as nine minutes of stoppage time – to claim their famous victory.

It’s probably a bit premature to write off the holders’ tournament chances based on one (admittedly embarrassing) result, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t amusing.
