Classy Javier Hernandez does not shirk responsibility after Mexico are hammered 7-0 by Chile

"We failed them"

The only people more embarrassed than the Mexican fans on Saturday night were the 11 starters and three substitutes who could not stem the powerful Chilean tide.

Mexico were eliminated from the Copa America Centenario in humiliating circumstances as they were torn asunder from whistle to whistle, losing 7-0 in California to defending champions Chile.

Four goals from Eduardo Vargas, a double from Edson Puch and a solitary strike from Alexis Sanchez sealed a place in the semi-finals against Colombia for the defending champions who will now be confident of securing just their second Copa America title.

In the aftermath of the game, Mexico’s striking sensation Javier Hernandez refused to shirk responsibility for the result as he posted a message to the fans of El Tri.

Chicharito’s tweet translates to:

Apologies to all Mexicans, that we failed them in a way that they don’t deserve tonight. We are very embarrassed, sad and hurting.’

While it will not come as much consolation to the supporters, at least the players aren’t blaming anybody but themselves and Hernandez is holding his hands up for his role in the defeat.

Hosts United States will now look to upset Argentina in the first semi-final on Tuesday night while Chile face Colombia on Wednesday night.
