West Ham fan spends £2,500 on Upton Park sign, doesn’t realise how big it is

No regrets, though

Simon Lloyd

Upton Park is no more.

West Ham bid farewell to their old stadium at the back end of last season and, as you can imagine, supporters were keen to get their hands on a memento from the old ground.

One of those fans was Dan Cairns who decided to splash out £2,500 on one of the West Ham signs that used to hang on the outside of the Boelyn Ground. No problem with that – if the man’s happy enough to stump up a four figure sum for his own souvenir, fair play to him.

But given that he was willing to splash out such a large fee, perhaps he should’ve done a bit of research into it.

According to a report in Metro, since buying the half a tonne sign, Dan has been faced with a bit of a dilemma, realising that the sign was much bigger than he had originally expected.

“As soon as I saw this I didn’t know where I was going to put it,” he admitted.

“Due to artist’s perspective we didn’t realise how big it is, even the people who moved it didn’t realise how big it was until it was on the ground.”

But does he regret parting with his hard-earned cash to be the owner of his own slice of Upton Park history? Not one bit.

“It’s a dream come true to have it though, the first shirt I got given when I was really really young was a West Ham top.

“It’s a once in a life time opportunity, there are only two of them and I’ll never have chance again.”

Unfortunately, due t o its size, 35-year-old Dan has had to store the sign down the side of his house.

“The only thing is I hate it being down the side of my house, I want everyone to be able to enjoy it,’ he added.”

Let’s hope Dan finds a home for it some time soon.
