Plenty of viewers are staggered by Cristiano Ronaldo’s wayward free-kicks

What the hell is going on with Ronnie?

It’s not been the finest spell in Cristiano Ronaldo’s glittering career, has it?

Missed penalties, disparaging comments about opponents and throwing a reporter’s microphone into a lake – he’s definitely enjoyed happier periods in the last decade or so.

Despite all this, the Real Madrid star entered Portugal’s remaining group stage against Hungary safe in the knowledge that a win would see them through to the knock out stages of Euro 2016.

All he had to do was find away past a 40-year-old bloke in a pair of pants that you’d expect Rab C. Nesbitt to wear.

Things became more complex when Ronaldo was upstaged by Zoltan Gera’s opener but he was instantly handed the opportunity to draw level with a free-kick… then another one… then another one.

As hard as he tried, his free-kicks seemed to become less and less of a threat.

Although his free-kick radar was a bit off, his through ball to Nani for Portugal’s 43rd minute equaliser was perfect.

Wouldn’t it be typical of the man if he goes and pings a set piece winner in the second half?
