Brendan Rodgers spurned in attempt to bring Liverpool fan favourite to Celtic

Nice try

The Scouse Cafu is going nowhere.

Brendan Rodgers did not get off to the greatest of starts as Celtic boss – losing 1-0 to Lincoln Red Imps in a Champions League Qualifier – but he is not panicking. Yet.

The Northern Irishman is slowly but surely putting his stamp on things at Parkhead and has made a couple of astute signings. He is said to be seeking to bring in Ireland defender Shane Duffy and is still in the market for another frontman.

As Efe Ambrose proved by his midweek shocker, Celtic are rickety at the back. Rodgers recognises that a strong defence is key to a decent league and European campaign so it is no surprise to hear that he approached his old club, Liverpool, about a deal for Jon Flanagan.

Such is Rodgers’ regard for the right back that he is said to be keen to make it a permanent move and not a loan arrangement.

However, the Liverpool Echo is reporting that Flanagan has been assured of his future with the Reds. Discussions with Jurgen Klopp in recent months have convinced him he has a role to play in a possible Liverpool resurgence and quest for trophies.

Despite two seasons of injury woes, Flanagan signed a three-year deal with the club in March of this year. The local lad and fan favourite returned to preseason training earlier than most of his teammates and set his sights on getting ‘super fit’.

He has, thus far, appeared in all of Liverpool’s preseason friendlies.

Rodgers may have to look elsewhere for a new full-back.
