Gerrard and Lampard named in MLS All-Star squad, but Pirlo misses out

Hey now, you're an all-star...

The people have spoken, and they want the Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard midfield axis to get one last chance.

The former England pairing could take to the field together in the MLS All-Star game against Spurs, after both veterans were selected by the league’s commissioner Don Garber.

A further 11 names were selected by fans in a public vote, with former Premier League players DaMarcus Beasley and Clint Dempsey among those chosen.

Kaka and David Villa also made the cut, though there was no place for new arrival Andrea Pirlo or recent hat-trick hero Sebastian Giovinco.

If Gerrard and Lampard both find themselves in the starting line-up, it could reopen the debate about whether the pair are incompatible or just misunderstood.

The current All-Star selection is not final, and other names will be brought into the fold ahead of the match on July 29.

Coach Pablo Mastroeni will name the full squad on July 18.
