Award-winning artist has an axe to grind

Lia Nicholls

Forget John McEnroe’s infamous outbursts, a Turner Prize-winning artist has taken bad losing to a new level.

Douglas Gordon, director of Neck of the Woods, went on an axe rampage attacking the wall of a theatre after receiving scathing reviews.

Critics described his play, starring Broadchurch’s Charlotte Rampling, as a “vanity project” and “humourless and sedate”. A few hours later Gordon was hacking at a concrete wall of Manchester’s HOME theatre.

If that wasn’t daft enough, he signed and dated his outburst and was hit with a fine for the repair bill.

Cut it out mate.
