Usain Bolt took time out from his victory interview to congratulate Wayde van Niekerk

Not only is Usain Bolt the fastest man in the world over 100 metres, but he’s one of the nicest too.

While he could have been forgiven for enjoying his moment in the media spotlight after another Olympic gold, his third in the event, the Jamaican has been here before.

That’s not the case with 400m champ and new world record holder Wayde van Niekerk, who has a long way to go before reaching Bolt levels of fame.

Van Niekerk took gold shortly after Bolt, who – like the true champion he is – ducked out mid-interview to congratulate the South African.

Bolt might have already said he won’t compete in the 2020 games, so fans will surely cherish his presence on the world stage in the knowledge that all good things come to an end.

The response only served to demonstrate the love that people have for the Jamaican, who runs again on Tuesday when the 200m heats get underway.

Van Niekerk’s achievement was truly groundbreaking, shattering a world record which had stood for some 17 years and nearly dipping under 43 seconds.

Some have suggested Bolt’s 100m record of 9.58 seconds will never be broken, but the new 400m boss has shown that anything is possible in top-level athletics.
