Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz left it all inside the cage in UFC 202’s main event.
The Notorious exacted revenge on the man who handed him his first UFC loss by scoring a closely-fought majority decision victory in the T-Mobile Arena on Saturday night.
All three judges scored three of the rounds in favour of McGregor – although one judge scored the five-round fight to be a draw overall after handing Diaz a 10-8 advantage for his utter domination in the third.
In the end, McGregor’s adapted gameplan paid dividends as he won only the second decision victory of his career – and the only one to go past the third round.
It was clear early on that part of McGregor’s plan was to utilise his leg kicks against Diaz, who has a tendency to for stand heavy on his lead leg.
The Irishman had a lot of success with his this tactic, tearing up the Stockton native’s lead leg with vicious strikes throughout the fight. Diaz took so much damage that he began to hobble around the octagon as early as the opening stanza.
However, after the fight was finished, it appeared as though it McGregor who was hobbling around, as he was spotted on crutches backstage.
It’s not clear exactly when the damage was done, but John Kavanagh confirmed on SportsCenter after the fight that the featherweight champion had broken his foot during the five-round war.
