Stephen Merchant has one of those faces that’s just cut out for comedy.
We all know him as the goofy, jocular, bespectacled bloke who always knocks around with Ricky Gervais.
He was the genius behind The Office and then starred alongside Gervais in Extras, as well as sending Mancunian misanthrope Karl Pikington around the world on a series of daft adventures in the hilarious An Idiot Abroad.
Merchant is a funny guy, so he’s probably the last person alive you’d imagine could be cast as a comic book villain.
But that’s exactly the role he’s going to be playing in the new movie Logan, the sequel to Wolverine starring Hugh Jackman.
While very little information has been made public about the X-Men spin-off follow-up, director James Mangold released an image of Merchant in character as Caliban.

It appears he’s going to be playing the bald, albino mutant in the third Wolverine film and we’re not going to lie, he looks pretty menacing.
To any comic book aficionados he will be instantly recognisable as the mutant outcast who first appeared in X-Men comics in 1981 and is known for his freakish ability to track other mutants within a 25-mile radius.
Merchant then went an shared an arguably even creepier image of himself in character on Instagram.

It’s going to be the final time Jackman dons those iconic adamantium Wolverine claws in the film, which will be his eights time playing the mutant.
It’s expected to be release in March next year.
