If two football teams play a match and both home kits are the same colour, what usually happens?
If you answered “the away team uses their change strip,” you’d be right.
Well, unless the away team is Southport.
The Merseyside club, who currently play in the National League (that’s the fifth tier of English football, for anyone who was wondering), have a yellow home kit.
Their away kit, however, is…also yellow. A slightly different yellow, but yellow all the same.
Surely that can’t be right? You’d think not, but here we are.

Now, you’re probably thinking it’s not all that big a deal. After all, not that many teams have yellow home kits, so some seasons it won’t even be an issue.
They’ll just wear yellow kit #1 for most of their matches and yellow kit #2 for a few others. No harm done.
This season, however, famously yellow-shirted club Torquay United are in the National League as well. And they hosted Southport at Plainmoor on Saturday, meaning the home side were forced to don their away kit.
To be fair to Torquay, there wasn’t much else they could do.

Now, we want to give Southport the benefit of the doubt here. There’s a chance they didn’t know what to expect when the trip to Torquay rolled around.
Wait, what’s that? The two clubs were in the same division last season too? Both wearing yellow home kits?
Sorry, Southport. You had your chance.
