ESPN’s Conor McGregor impersonator was easily the most terrifying thing about Halloween

Stuff of nightmares

Ben Kiely

If you were proud that you managed to survive Halloween without being truly spooked by anything, your luck may have just run out.

ESPN really upped the ante this year. In a bid to scare the living daylights out of their viewers, they had a few of their reporters dress up as some of the world’s biggest sports stars and try, but inevitably fail to impersonate them.

One brave soul tried his utmost to embody UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor, but as we’ve seen so many times before, the American’s inability to pull off a convincing Irish accent proved to be (one of) his (many) downfall(s).

Take Titus Welliver, for example. You may not remember the name, but you’ll recognise him as that guy whose name you don’t know, but he keeps showing up in everything. Welliver is a highly respected actor who has shone in films such as Argo, Gone Baby Gone, The Town and other productions that weren’t directed by Ben Affleck.

However, his portrayal as ‘True IRA’ member Jimmy O’Phelan in the FX smash-hit series Sons of Anarchy… well, it wasn’t very good at all.

Yikes!

If Welliver’s O’Phelan was cringe-worthy, then Israel Gutierrez’s Notorious on “Around the Horn.” was downright frightening… and cringe-worthy in equal measure.

The reporter donned the Gorilla chest-tattoo, sported the shaved back and sides haircut that has been seeping out of hipster culture into the mainstream since 2013 and, of course, he had the tri-colour draped around his shoulders.

There was an accent too. What exact accent he was going for… we couldn’t be too sure.

Well, at least he has his dignity.

Oh wait, that’s not true at all.
