It’s got 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and even more critical praise.
Game of Thrones fans are currently staring into their own version of The Long Night as the wait for Season 7 feels like it’s taking an eternity.
Winter is here and if you need something to fill the Westeros-sized hole that’s currently in your TV viewing schedule, we highly recommend The Last Kingdom.
The eight-part adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s historical novels is now available to stream on Netflix and its first season has been earning solid reviews – it currently has a rating of 8.3/10 on IMDB and Variety have described it as being “awash in blood, gore and sex, but with strong characters and a compelling plot”.

Right, what’s it about then?  It’s 872 and many of the separate kingdoms of what we now know as England have fallen to the invading Danes, leaving the great kingdom of Wessex standing alone and defiant under the command of King Alfred.
Against this turbulent backdrop lives the main character, Uhtred, who’s the son of a Saxon nobleman. Uhtred gets captured by the invading Danish forces and is ultimately raised as one of their own.
Forced to choose between the country of his birth and the people of his upbringing, his loyalties are constantly tested. On a quest to reclaim his birthright, Uhtred must tread a dangerous path between both sides if he is to play his part in the birth of a new nation and, ultimately, recapture his ancestral lands.
If that sounds too serious then don’t worry, there’s also plenty of swords, daggers, spears, sex, cursing, Â revenge, cloaks, beards, betrayal, horses, mud, blood, deaths and violence.
The Last Kingdom on Netflix could be your next binge-watch.
