Arsenal close to agreeing mammoth new deal with Mesut Özil

The World Cup winner will become the club's top earner

Good news, Gooners: it looks like Mesut Özil’s is closing in on his new deal.

According to John Cross in the Mirror, the German international is said to be close to agreeing a new £200,000-a-week deal to stay at Arsenal, with his representatives holding further talks about a renewal over the international break. The new deal would also make the attacking midfielder the highest earner at the club.

The 28-year-old, who joined the club from Real Madrid in 2013, has 18 months to run on his current deal which nets him a mere £140,000-a-week (how does he put food on the table?).

Despite reports linking him with a move elsewhere, Özil is said to be happy in London and has also recently bought a new £10m home in the city. An extended stay at the Emirates appears to be looking more and more likely for the World Cup winner.

While the news on Özil is positive, Cross also goes on to say that things aren’t quite so clear with Alexis Sanchez, who also has 18-months left to run on his deal with the club. The Chilean, who arrived from Barcelona a year after Özil, is said to be after a huge increase on his current £130,000-a-week wage packet.
