Metallica played Enter Sandman on toy instruments with Jimmy Fallon and it totally rocked

They've never sounded better

Rich Cooper

They’re the biggest heavy metal band of all time, but after 35 years on the road, Metallica have decided to soften their sound.

But fear not, rock fans, it’s not going to last forever. To promote their new album Hardwired… to Self-Destruct, Metallica stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to say hello. Normally when bands go on talk shows, they play their latest single or maybe a special cut from the new record, but Metallica did something a little different.

For one of the biggest acts on the planet, Metallica aren’t always the most radio-friendly band, but even if you aren’t a metalhead by trade, you’ll almost certainly know their biggest tune Enter Sandman. But instead of just running through the same song they’ve played a thousand times over, they picked up some kids’ toy instruments, recruited Jimmy and The Roots into the band, and let rip.

Lead singer James Hetfield is on toy clarinet, drummer Lars Ulrich plays a Fisher-Price drum, guitarist Kirk Hammet is rocking the melodica and bass player Robert Trujillo is tearing it up on a teeny tiny electric guitar, with Jimmy joining in on vocals, kazoo, Casio keyboard and drums (show off).

Whether they decide to take this new sound out on their next tour remains to be seen, but we think you’ll agree, ‘Tallica have never sounded better.

Now let’s see them do the entirety of Master of Puppets like this.
