Leeds United and Newcastle United met in the league today for the first time since the death of Gary Speed, who played for both clubs during his career.
And supporters of both clubs paid tribute to the former midfielder, who took his own life five years ago this month, with a rousing minute’s applause 11 minutes into the game, in recognition of the Welshman’s squad number at St James’ Park.

Before the game, Magpies boss Rafa Benitez had described Speed as “A good player for both clubs, a big name and someone who had the respect of everyone”.
Speed was in the Newcastle starting XI the last time they played away at Leeds, a 2-2 draw early in the 2003/04 season.
And his former Newcastle teammate Alan Shearer, who scored twice on that day, was one of many fans and former colleagues to recognise the tribute on social media.

Both sets of players had warmed up for the game in shirts bearing Speed’s name and number on the back, while his parents were also in attendance at a packed Elland Road.

Speed began his career with Leeds, playing more than 200 League games for the club and winning the old First Division title in 1992. He played Champions League football during his time with Newcastle, and also played for Everton, Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield United during more than two decades as a player.
