You can’t eat a clap
For the last two and a half months, the United Kingdom has been standing at its front door and clapping for the NHS and frontline workers at 8pm every Sunday.
Now, the initiator behind the campaign has called for it to be brought to an end.
While it is right that we show our appreciation for those workers, many people fear that this public appreciation has become a surrogate for what they really need – the pay they deserve.
The truth is that clapping for frontline workers is simply not enough. We have to go further.
After 10 weeks, the initiator of Clap for Carers has said it’s time to stop the clapping.
The point was never just to show our appreciation for frontline workers. It was to raise their place in society.
