11 questions that every Star Wars fan has at the end of The Last Jedi

Paul Moore

Spoiler alert, obviously.

As stated previously, we’re massive fans of The Last Jedi because Rian Johnson has taken the saga in a whole new direction.

If you haven’t seen the film yet, here’s another spoiler alert. Don’t get mad at us.

DEATH STAR-SIZED SPOILERS ARE INCLUDED BELOW.

1) Broomsticks and lightsabers.

You can see why Disney/Lucasfilm has given Rian Johnson a whole new trilogy to create because he’s very much in favour of expanding the Force outside of the standard Jedi vs Sith lore.

In The Force Awakens, we learned that Rey – without any training – was able to harness and use the Force to combat Kylo Ren and perform the Jedi mind trick on Daniel Craig a Stormtrooper. ‘Force-sensitive’ beings exist in the galaxy and it’s clear that at the end of the film, the ‘slave child’ (awful name there) that moves the broomstick while wearing Rose’s Resistance ring is one of them.

Rogue One also floated the idea of Force-sensitive – remember Donnie Yen’s character?- but Star Wars purists might dislike the fact that part of the mythology has been negated.

Luke’s dead – although we expect him to return just like Yoda and Obi-Wan in previous films – but there was something special about the fact that Star Wars – the Episodic films – were strictly a Skywalker story. Granted, people might argue that the franchise needed a kick in the bum to freshen things up, but will audiences be as invested in the story of this ‘slave child’ (that name really doesn’t get better on repeat) as they were with Luke etc?

One thing is for certain though, Star Wars now has an entire galaxy of Force-sensitive heroes to choose from. If Rey eventually starts a Jedi training school, she’s going to be very busy.

2) “The Force is strong with you young Skywalker, but you’re not a Jedi yet.”

Right, what’s the deal with Rey’s parents? In the period since TFA, we were led to believe that this would be one of the central mysteries of the new films. Great, we love theories that fill that Alderaan-sized void between Star Wars films being released. This being said, if Kylo Ren was speaking the truth – Rey’s parents were just cold-blooded junkers that left her on Jakku – does anyone else feel a bit cheated?

The scene when Rey stares into the cavernous ‘mirrors’ seems to confirm this – that trippy sequence basically just said that Rey’s history isn’t as important as her future. Forget the past and move on.

Granted, the idea that anyone can be a Jedi is romantic and inspirational, but we’re still holding onto hope that Daisy Ridley’s character is a Kenobi/Skywalker/Solo etc. After all, why does she have such a strong connection with Kylo Ren – a connection that’s not too dissimilar between Leia and Luke?

Was Kylo lying, or did he give into the light and speak the truth. We shall see.

3) “Always two there are, no more, no less. A Master and an apprentice”

Well, that’s bollo*ks because Supreme Leader Snoke is dead and Luke is now one with the Force.

Again, Rian Johnson – to his immense credit and bravery – has torn up the standard ‘rules’ that exist in Star Wars folklore. This being said, could Rey and Kylo take on young Padawans in Episode IX?

Just make them Porgs and we’re happy.

4) Speaking of Dark Lords…

Who/what the hell is Snoke?

Again, Johnson couldn’t give a damn about answering the question that had Star Wars fans stumped for months. Remember the theories that Snoke was Darth Plagueis, or even Darth Vader reborn? Who knows if we’ll ever get his backstory.

Spin-off?

5) What the hell happened to the Knights of Ren?

They featured in that incredibly cool flashback during The Force Awakens but weren’t given any mention in The Last Jedi. Maybe Kylo Ren got bored of them, took away his football and stormed off in a hissy fit. We wouldn’t put it past him.

There’s also a school of thought that Rey’s vision in TFA was actually a prophecy of something that’s yet to come.

Either way, we want to see more of Kylo’s angry friends.

6) How did Maz Kanata get Luke’s lightsaber?

Who knows.

7) What was Maz doing when she ‘hologramed’ with Finn and Poe?

We REALLY want to know. Christ, that 15-second scene looked better than the entirety of The Phantom Menace. We especially loved the fact that she had a jetpack like the one Boba Fett used.

8) “In time you’ll learn to use it”

In Return of the Jedi, Luke told Leia that she’ll be able to use the Force. Sadly, Star Wars fans won’t see everyone’s favourite Princess use those abilities in Episode IX. This being said, we presume that Leia is skilled with the Force because she somehow managed to find her way back to the ship after the hull exploded.

We’ve already heard that Lucasfilm won’t be using a resurrected CGI Leia for the next film but that just could be a bit of subterfuge on their part. If this is the last time that we see Carrie Fisher, her send-off with Luke was perfect.

9) Why didn’t Poe know?

In The Last Jedi, the entire fate of The Resistance basically revolved around the slowest race in space history.

Poe Dameron is clearly being groomed for leadership – something we can see happening since the sad passing of Carrie Fisher – but surely the best pilot in the Resistance wouldn’t have mutinied if he was trusted with the plan?

10) If DJ could flee jail, why did he just stay there and wait?

We presume Benicio Del Toro is too cool to even answer that question.

In a very endearing way, his codebreaker just didn’t give a f**k during the film- after all, he’s Fenster! Maybe he just wanted some company and felt that Rose and Finn would be his new best mates.

Did he manage to escape the spaceship before it blew up? Who knows.

11) What the hell do Chewbacca and that Porg talk about?

No time to explain. PORG!
