There’s good news for How I Met Your Mother fans today.
Reports suggest that Fox executives are looking at getting a spin-off from the massively popular show (with a massively disappointing ending) off the ground.
In fact, this is not the first time a spin-off has been attempted: a show called How I Met Your Dad was pitched to execs and even had a script for the pilot episode, but the creators moved on to another show and the project was shelved.
However, Fox chairman Dana Walden told Deadline that “the studio will try [developing a spin-off] with different writers.”
“They will be starting from scratch,” Walden said, suggesting that the previous attempt will be ditched entirely in favour of a new idea. “It’s one that’s been slowly cooked. If it’s the right idea the right execution, we’ll take that.”
For a lot of fans, the end How I Met Your Mother left a bitter taste in the mouth, so this could be an opportunity to right some wrongs. Not that wrong, though. That wrong will probably never be completely righted.
However, Walden had said previously that a reunion show could be on the cards.
She said: “We’ve been in business with so many of these creators for such a long time and these shows are so long running, and they’ve had the opportunity through streaming services to be introduced to an entirely new generation of viewers.
“That does feel like an event, reuniting characters from a very long-running show.
“I would say How I Met Your Mother, one of the greatest shows ever in our library at the studio, at some point I would hope we would have the opportunity to reunite those characters and tell a new story if [show creators] Craig [Thomas] and Carter [Bays] had the desire to do that.”
