Everything is on the table, says District Attorney
Criminal charges are possible following the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins by actor Alec Baldwin, according to a prosecutor working on the case.
Santa Fe County District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies told the New York Times they “haven’t ruled out anything” as the investigation continues.
“Everything at this point, including criminal charges, is on the table,” she explained.
Two key focus points in the investigation will be around the type of ammunition used in the gun which killed Hutchins, as well as ascertaining who placed the bullets in the gun, Carmack-Altwies told to the US newspaper.
“There were an enormous amount of bullets on this set and we need to find out what kinds they were.”
The ttorney also said the investigation could take months of “follow-up investigation” in order to “get to the point of charging.”
Hutchins, a 42-year-old cinematographer, was killed on the set of an upcoming movie called Rust last Thursday (October 21) in New Mexico. Alec Baldwin fatally shot her with a loaded weapon he believed to be a prop gun. Baldwin was reportedly told that the gun was safe before firing it on set.
Taking to Twitter, Baldwin said: “There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours.
“I’m fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna.”
Halyna’s family members support the investigation and, according to the Sun, have said that “if someone made a mistake then they will have to pay.”
A source added: “They just don’t understand how something dreadful like this could have happened when safety measures are supposed to be in place.”
