The new Tomb Raider film is expected near the end of 2017.

Ex-Machina actress Alicia Vikander has been given the nod to be the next Lara Croft.

A new Tomb Raider film has been rumoured for years now with many names touted, but this week saw Alicia cast as the archaeologist-adventurer for the upcoming film.

The announcement is yet another feather in the cap for one of the biggest actresses of the moment.

The past 18 months have been a rollercoaster for the talented Alicia. After breaking on the scene with her turn as cyborg Ava in Ex Machina, Alicia has appeared in a number of films including The Man from U.N.C.L.E, Burnt and The Danish Girl, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for earlier this year.

The 27-year-old will also be appearing in new spy film Jason Bourne this summer.

Lara Croft is of course, one of gaming’s biggest icons, starring in some of the best games of the past twenty years (recent release Rise of the Tomb Raider on Xbox One is particularly excellent, as is mobile game Lara Croft GO).

The new Tomb Raider film will look to reinvigorate the film franchise following the two memorable Angelina Jolie films of the early 2000s. Norwegian director Roar Uthaug (behind The Wave) has already been signed on to direct the film, which will see a “young and untested Croft fighting to survive her first adventure.”

Fans of Lara will have to wait though, as the new Tomb Raider film is expected sometime towards the end of 2017.
