Bear Grylls faces a fine after killing and boiling a frog

As far as we’re aware, he didn’t drink its piss

Celebrity adventurer Bear Grylls could be fined by environmental officials in Bulgaria for his activities inside a protected national park, which included catching a wild frog before killing and boiling it.

The incident occurred during filming for Grylls’ Running Wild series, shown on American television network NBC, in an episode where he took along TV ballroom dancer Derek Hough along for his trademark wilderness exploits.

However, authorities are unhappy with what the duo got up to in the Rila mountains and are said by BTA to be considering a fine of between 1,000 and 10,000 leva (£450-£4,450) for the production company involved and a separate 500 and 5,000 leva charge for Grylls and Hough.

In a statement, the Bulgarian environment minister listed what they were unhappy with: “It is evident from the film material that during the shooting there were breaches to the regulations and rules of conduct in protected areas.

“[These were] entering and swimming in the water basin of the Karakashevo lake, lighting a fire, and catching and killing an animal.”

These activities are pretty standard Grylls fare – unless they didn’t think of making a law against squeezing the water out of elephant shit or giving yourself an enema – but the ministry are adamant they briefed production crew on what was and wasn’t allowed before filming.

Therefore, they are also investigating the role of park officials who were also on set.
