The film is from the director of Man on Fire, Top Gun and True Romance.
Our TV movie pick for tonight (Thursday, 11 July) is Beverly Hills Cop II, the second entry in the classic action comedy franchise which was directed by the great Tony Scott (Man on Fire, Top Gun, True Romance).
The plot centres around Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy), a Detroit cop who returns to Beverly Hills after his friend, Captain Andrew Bogomil (Ronny Cox), is gunned down in the street and left in critical condition.
Arriving in the city, he teams with Bogomil’s fellow Beverly Hills cops – Detective Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and Sergeant John Taggart (John Ashton) – to find who is responsible.
In the process, the trio piece together how the attempted assassination was linked to the Alphabet Crimes, a series of high-value robberies.
While a step down from the original due to its overcomplicated, borderline nonsensical plot and its less certain blend of action and comedy, Beverly Hills Cop II still has plenty to like.
This includes the glossy ’80s aesthetic Scott gives the film, its hyper-kinetic action set-pieces and its fun performances – particularly Brigitte Nielsen (Rocky IV) as the ruthless henchwoman for the big bad of the story (Jürgen Prochnow).
Airing on TV just after the fourth film in the franchise, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, landed on Netflix – Beverly Hills Cop II is on Sky Showcase tonight at 9pm.
The entire series is also available to stream on Netflix.
