Crime fans will love the new show from the creators of Gone Baby Gone and The Town

This could be very, very special

The criminal underworld of Boston has always been a fertile ground for stories of crime and corruption.

In recent years, we’ve seen the likes of The Departed, The Town, Spotlight, Gone Baby Gone, Mystic River and Black Mass examine some of the nefarious crimes and individuals that have marked Beantown, but audiences are set to experience something a little bit different.

After stepping aside from playing Batman, we’re delighted to see that Ben Affleck is returning to a genre he’s really excelled at as the director of The Town, Gone Baby Gone and Argo has created a new crime drama, City on a Hill.

At the start of the year, we marked this show as ‘one to watch’ and the first trailer for the 10-episode series has definitely raised our excitement levels.

The show is set in early 1990s Boston. Assistant district attorney Decourcy Ward forms an unlikely alliance with a corrupt yet venerated FBI veteran, Jackie Rohr. Together, they take on a case that ultimately changes the city’s entire criminal justice system.

Kevin Bacon will star in the lead role and the inclusion of Affleck and Matt Damon as producers can only add to the show’s credibility.

Having seen the first trailer, we were instantly reminded of a mix between The Town and The Wire.

Christ, if it’s half as good as those two, we’ll be very happy.

City on a Hill premieres on 16 June in the US but at the moment, there’s no word on an Irish date.

However, with the level of talent that’s involved in this production, we’d be amazed if it’s not shown here.

Take a look.
