Father Dougal in Derry Girls. That would be incredible!
During the course of Father Ted, Dougal never really fared well with nuns. There was that whole incident when he was accidentally arrested for shoplifting. Remember when they all had to go down to the police station to get him? And the police station went on fire? And then Dougal had to be rescued by helicopter? Then he fell out of the helicopter. Over the zoo. Do you remember the tigers?
What was the name of the nun again? Dougal was wearing his blue jumper.
Ah, Sister Assumpta!
There was also that famous moment when he was next to Sister Monica as he delivered the most memorable last rites in the history of Catholicism.
“Anyway, you’re there now with our Lord and Stalin and Bob Marley and the rest of them and of course my own parents. Totus tuus minimus canus, costa curta Baggio, Roberto.” He should be Pope.
Anyway, given the fact that Ardal O’Hanlon’s character is one of – if not THE – funniest Irish comic comedic creations ever, we think that he’d be a perfect fit for a small cameo in Channel 4’s Derry Girls.
In fact, the show’s creator, Lisa McGee has even said that she’d love to get the opportunity to add him to the cast for next season. McGee and O’Hanlon previously worked together on London Irish so an appearance from Craggy Island’s thickest priest isn’t a massive stretch of the imagination.
“I absolutely love Ardal O’Hanlon. I love him, and we’ve worked with him before. He just has that real unique thing that you just love watching him. He’s funny and you like him, he has that likability,” McGee said during a panel at the Edinburgh Television Festival.
This being said, the casting for Season 2 hasn’t even started yet and there’s “no hint” yet of a cameo but given the popularity of the show and the harmonious relationship between McGee and O’Hanlon, we could see this happening.
Imagine seeing Dougal in Derry. YOU LET DOUGAL GO TO DERRY!
During an extremely interesting panel discussion, the whole cast and creators discuss the incredible first season of Derry Girls and provide some excellent anecdotes about what it’s like filming the show.
Aside from this, we’re delighted to say that Derry Girls also won the Edinburgh TV Award for Best Comedy Series. Cracker.
