Disney reportedly reinstate James Gunn as Guardians of the Galaxy 3 director

He’s back on board

Disney has reportedly reinstated James Gunn for the next Guardians of the Galaxy film, having previously fired the director after controversial tweets resurfaced.

There was much outcry in the wake of last summer’s ousting, with the core Guardians cast penning an open letter declaring support for Gunn, while the likes of David Bautista were especially vocal in their opposition to the decision.

Some months later, Gunn was attached to helm Suicide Squad 2 (or, as it is actually called, The Suicide Squad), while Disney approached new directors including Taika Watiti to take over the GOTG series.

Having already penned the script for Guardians 3, many fans called for his return so that he could see his original vision through.

After much drama, it appears that they will get their wish.

On Friday (15 March), Deadline posted an exclusive report stating that Gunn has been reinstated as writer and director, as confirmed by representatives for both Gunn and Marvel.

Deadline says that the move to rehire Gunn was actually made months ago following conversations with Disney studio leadership and the team at Marvel Studios.

As for why, exactly? It seems that Gunn’s public apology and handling of the situation gained him some favour, and all has been forgiven.

The same report notes that Gunn took full responsibility for his actions and never once criticised the studio, which may have played a part in his return to the fold.

As for The Suicide Squad  – which now has Idris Elba on board – that’s still going ahead with Gunn behind the camera.

Production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to commence once that project is out of the way.

High drama, indeed. Read the full report here.
