Only real nerds will have spotted everything.
The trailer for Avengers: Infinity War has finally dropped – and to say we’re excited would be an understatement. The film finally brings together The Avengers, The Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man, and host of other Marvel heroes in one movie for the first time ever.
The trailer is packed with references and easter eggs that only the nerdiest superhero fans will get all of, so we’ve done our best to break it down and point out every last detail for you.
This shot early in the trailer shows Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr), Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), and Dr Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) standing together, along with Strange’s sidekick Wong (Benedict Wong). Dr Strange already met Banner in Thor Ragnarok, but Iron Man now joining him shows the scope of the film’s story.
Then we get to see Tom Holland’s Peter Parker for the first time since his debut solo movie Spider-Man: Homecoming. Also, behind him we can see British actor Ross Kemp, who has been confirmed to be playing a tiny role as Parker’s principal Andrew Davis, who made his first appearance all the way back in 1963’s Amazing Spider-Man #4. We don’t imagine it being a big role for him, but it’s pretty amazing to see Kemp in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
Here we see the foursome of Iron Man, Hulk, Dr Strange and Wong again, but with a notable addition: Big Shaq, the alter-ego of British comedian and rapper Michael Dapaah. After becoming an internet sensation with his viral hit “Man’s Not Hot”, self-confessed fan Chris Evans approached him to cameo in the film.
And here we have the big reveal: our first look at new Everton manager Sam Allardyce as the big bad Thanos. Of course, all his scenes would have been shot long before he took over at Goodison Park, but it does mean we’ll be seeing a lot of Big Sam over 2018.
Allardyce isn’t the only football star rumoured to be appearing in Avengers: Infinity War – Manchester United favourite Phil Jones was spotted taking meetings with Marvel’s movie head honcho Kevin Feige during the close season, and stories have spread that he’s set to make his acting debut in the film. Nothing has been confirmed, but fans think they can make out the defender in this scene. What do you think?
One star who is confirmed to appear is former WWE wrestler The Ultimate Warrior. Despite passing away in 2014, Warrior has been lured back to the big screen for an unspecified role – probably in part due to his high-profile friendship with Joss Whedon. In an interview with Variety last month, the Warrior explained: “I was rather content with being deceased, to tell you the truth – but the chance to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was just too big to turn down.”
The final new character to appear in the trailer is Raffles the Pup, Captain America’s pet pooch from the 1940s. Raffles is a bit of a joke character these days, and hasn’t really appeared in the comics for over 60 years, so it’ll be interesting to see how he’s brought back into the fold. And if that face looks familiar, yes, that is Eddie from Fraiser.
Finally, there’s Chris Evan’s new beard!
Avengers: Infinity War is out next summer.
