Doc Ock is back, but will Tobey Maguire be making a bombshell return in the new Spiderman film?
On Tuesday, the internet was sent into overdrive by the release of the spectacular new trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home, which confirmed the return of the infamous Doc Ock, and sparked all sorts of theories amongst fans.
The big reveal of the trailer was weirdly something we already knew – that Doc Ock would be returning, with Alfred Molina reprising the role of the iconic villain. This was the worst-kept secret in cinema, with Molina straight up admitting it in an interview months ago.
We last saw Molina as Doctor Octopus (to give him his official title) in 2004’s Spider-Man 2 alongside Tobey Maguire’s incarnation of the superhero.
But the significance is this: it’s not just a new version of Doc Ock, it’s the same Doc Ock. The same Doc Ock that took on Tobey Maguire’s Spidey. And with Doctor Strange meddling with those damn multiverses again, and the concept of different Spider-Men from different universes already explored in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, some are already convinced that we may see Maguire and perhaps even Andrew Garfield feature in the new film.
Not convinced? Well keep reading.
At the end of the new trailer, Doc Ock appears and delivers a chilling ‘Hello Peter.’ But we don’t see who he’s talking to. We can assume it’s Peter Parker, but which one?

Many fans believe he’s speaking to Maguire’s Peter Parker, because how would Doc Ock (the exact same version of the character from Spider-Man 2 remember) recognise Tom Holland’s Spider-Man?
Super Into It, a podcast for “all things Marvel, superheroes, and pop-culture,” tweeted: “We think this is Marvel giving us a misdirect.
“This ‘Hello, Peter’ isn’t meant for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. Because how would Tobey Maguire’s Doc Ock recognise him? There’s a missing piece from this spidey puzzle.”

Others are well onboard with this theory as well.
One fan wrote: “He is 100,000 per cent talking to Tobey’s Spider-Man. There is no way he’s that familiar with Tom Holland’s Spidey yet.”

Whether Maguire returns in the new film or not, it looks set to be wild. Not only have we got the return of Doc Ock but there was a not-so-subtle hint that we may see the return of Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin.
One part of the trailer shows an unmistakable pumpkin bomb landing amongst some cars, with Dafoe’s recognisable cackle in the background.
