He’s also recruited the director behind 2019’s Detective Pikachu
The boss behind Fast & Furious is bringing nostalgia classic Goosebumps back to telly for the first time since the 90s.
In a pairing that no one expected, Neal H Mortiz, the Executive Producer behind car thriller Fast & Furious, will be teaming up with Detective Pikachu director Rob Letterman to create a new series based on author R.L Stine’s iconic kids book of the same name for Disney+.
Stine’s horror stories for kids were first adapted for TV back in 1996, running for four series and terrifying young viewers with their first taste of almost-adult horror fare.
It’s reported that this new take will differ from its 90s counterpart by ditching the anthology format in favour of one continuous tale, told across 10 episodes.
Disney+’s new take on Goosebumps will follow five high-school kids who are forced to work together after they accidentally unleash all manner of terrors onto their small town. With frightening familiar faces from Stine’s book series no doubt due to appear throughout, the team will have to forge friendships and put aside rivalries if they want to survive.
Letterman also directed 2015’s Goosebumps movie which starred Jack Black and spawned a sequel in 2015, directed by Ari Sandel.
As first reported by Variety, Letterman will helm the first episode of the series which he’ll co-write with Nick Stoller, the creative that penned 2011’s The Muppets and its 2014 sequel The Muppets: Most Wanted.
Stine’s young adult books were first published by Scholastic and quickly became hugely popular among 90s kids, avid readers and budding horror fans.
The series has gone on to become one of the best selling book franchises of all time, with over 400 million English language copies now in print and stories translated into 32 different languages worldwide.
