First trailer for Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon released

Danny Jones

There are a couple of familiar faces in there…

After the rollercoaster of the last season, many of us would rather leave Game of Thrones behind us. That being said, this trailer has roped us in.

The first trailer for the inaugural spin-off and GoT prequel series, House of the Dragon, dropped earlier this morning and it looks pretty exciting, we can’t lie.

Recognise anyone? That’s right, Doctor Who himself, Matt Smith is in there as Daemon Targaryen and you might also recognise Olivia Cooke from the likes of Ready Player One and Bates Motel, who is playing Alicent Hightower – the daughter of Hand of the King, Otto Hightower.

Moreover, whilst we can’t really spot him anywhere in the trailer, we’ll also be getting Paddy Considine (Dead Man’s Shoes, Hot Fuzz, The World’s End) playing Viserys Targaryen. Before you ask, no, it’s not Dany’s brother from the show: that was Viserys III – this is King Viserys Targaryen. This takes some 200 years prior to the events of the show, remember?

This new series will obviously explore a much deeper level of lore previously covered in the books and touched upon in the show, of course, but this will be the most in-depth look at the Targaryen household we’ve had yet.

The show has been co-created and written by George R. R. Martin himself and Ryan Condal, with the latter acting as showrunner alongside Miguel Sapochnik, who is set to direct both the pilot and a number of other episodes.

House of the Dragon drops on January 1st 2022. What do we reckon? Are we all ready to dive back into GRRM’s wonderful world?
