The video game is apparently responsible for 5% of all divorce proceedings in the last 8 months
Fortnite is one of those things that you’re either aware of, and it has subsequently consumed your life entirely, or you’ve no idea what it is, and you’re probably in a better place for that very reason.
The online shooter boasts have tens of millions of players playing it at any one time and has become a total global phenomenon since the full launch in 2017.
And like any phenomenon, it is now the cause of relationships ending.
Divorce Online have stated that the game was mentioned in divorce filings in over 200 hundred cases in the UK since the start of 2018, with a spokesperson for the company stating that “addiction to drugs, alcohol and gambling have often been cited as reasons for relationship breakdowns but the dawn of the digital revolution has introduced new addictions.
“These now include online pornography, online gaming, and social media, so it is no surprise to us that more and more people are having relationship problems because of our digital addictions.
“These numbers equate to roughly 5% of the 4,665 petitions we have handled since the beginning of the year and as one of the largest filers of divorce petitions in the UK, is a pretty good indicator.”
Now, anyone who has ever played Mario Kart or Street Fighter and saw absolute red when they lost a round at the last second due to a sudden sneaky attack can probably relate to the mentality of someone interrupting you mid-game, getting you called, and all of sudden you’re screaming “I WANT A DIVORCE!” at the person you love.
Knowing that this is a likelihood, maybe keep the Fortnite playing to when you’ve actually got some alone time.
