Season 7 can’t come quickly enough.
There are only two certainties in life, death and taxes.
The same logic also applies to Game of Thrones because all know that a Lannister always pays his debts” and your favourite character will probably die. That’s just how things are in Westeros.
Over the decades, the Iron Throne has been occupied by various different Baratheons and Targaryens, but while the list of rulers over the Seven Kingdoms constantly changes, one institution remains constant, the Iron Bank and they’re about to be reintroduced.
Game of Thrones fans should remember Mark Gatiss’ appearance in the show, he played Tycho Nestoris, the representative for the Iron Bank.
Nestoris featured when Stannis traveled to Braavos to ask for a loan, and again in Season 5 when Mace Tyrell was sent on a mission to discuss the Crown’s debt.
Spoilers are coming.
Well, it appears that the “the Iron Bank will have its due” because in a recent interview at the BFI & Radio Times Festival, Gatiss revealed that he will be returning in Season 7.
“Yes, I did it in Belfast last year. I can’t tell you anything more obviously, mostly because I don’t know anything. I’ve done four episodes now and there’s two more they think. It’s a huge saga and I don’t know and I rather like that. But I’ve had a lovely time. The last scene I’m in with – I probably can’t say because it would be a spoiler, wouldn’t it?”
Right, why is his return significant?
One aspect of the books that the TV show has skirted over is the frayed relationship between the Iron Bank and House Lannister. Aside from the fact that the Iron Bank financed Stannis’ rebellion, Cersei has been apathetic and hostile towards paying the Lannister debt to the Iron Bank and their relationship has soured.
Given that the gold reserves of the Lannisters are severely depleted, along with the fact that they can no longer rely on the finances of House Tyrell, it’s increasingly likely that the Lannisters will lack the funds to finance any upcoming war.
If the bank wants to make any money or exact a measure of revenge, they’re far more likely to give money to some of Cersei’s enemies.
Now who would that be?
July 16th can’t come quickly enough.
