Lovers become enemies
Spoiler alert – unless it turns out to be untrue…
Game of Thrones is officially back on our screens with episode 1 giving us the classic season opener setup before things get really serious in the weeks to come.
And it cannot get more serious than the final ever series of the hit show, with an absolute plethora of fan theories darting around the place. Is Littlefinger still alive? Is Sam narrating the whole thing? Is Cersei going to die while giving birth to Euron Greyjoy’s child, who turns out to be a dwarf?
But anything can sound plausible at this stage with the right mix of plot undercurrents and vicious irony. Hence, the latest discussion on Reddit highlighting a souring relationship between Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen.
This details how Jon’s newly-revealed Targaryen heritage and Dany’s own paternal psycho streak could clash in a bloody battle at the end of Season 8.
“How Dany reacts to Jon’s true heritage could be the death knell of their love and alliance,” wrote Reddit GoT fan nosefouratto.
“If she reacts with anger and calls him a traitor or something to that effect, this will prove everything he has been hearing from all of his loved ones to be true. He will pull away from her, and make a claim on the throne in an effort to save the realm from another monarch who puts power lust in front of all else.
“I think there may be some kind of inciting event during or right before the battle for Winterfell that will truly sour Jon against Dany enough to go to war or at least to redact his proclamation that she is his Queen.
“I think it may be essential to the believability of Jon waging war against Dany. At that point, he will reluctantly become Aegon Targaryen in earnest, and a military conflict between the two Targaryens may be on the horizon.”
Of course, it doesn’t take a genius to work out how Dany isn’t the most popular gal in Westeros. Sansa is noticeably suspicious of her, Tyrion and her other advisors spoke of their slight scepticism during Episode 1, and Sam has now realised his father and brother were burnt to a crisp for refusing to bend the knee.
Let’s see how this one plays out, with episode 2 landing on Monday.
