It is landing on the streaming giant very soon.
A new edition of Godzilla Minus One, the beloved 2023 monster movie that picked up an Oscar earlier this year, is coming to Netflix very soon.
Titled Godzilla Minus One / Minus Color, it is described as a “meticulously decolorised version” of the Japanese runaway blockbuster.
In layman’s terms, it is a black-and-white edition of the original – similar to the famous Black and Chrome edition of Mad Max: Fury Road.
Hailing from the country which gave us the first Godzilla film all the way back in 1954, the colour version of Minus One currently holds a whopping 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – making it the best reviewed entry in the monster movie franchise ever.
Godzilla Minus One is set in 1945 Japan at the end of World War II – with its plot synopsis reading: “Post-war Japan is at its lowest point when a new crisis emerges in the form of a giant monster, baptised in the horrific power of the atomic bomb.”
Released in Ireland and the UK back in December 2023, the colour version of the blockbuster has been raved about by critics for its blend of monster movie spectacle and an emotional human story, as well as for taking the franchise back to its post-World War II roots.
The film has been so well-received, in fact, that it even went on to pick up an Oscar this year in the Best Visual Effects category.
As for the reasons for releasing a black-and-white version of the smash-hit, Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki explained to The Wrap:
“The original 1954 Godzilla is, of course, in black and white… That in and of itself made us interested in what a Godzilla film would look like created with modern technology in black-and-white.
“We went back to the colorist and we actually masked different portions of each shot and adjusted the contrast by hand, as opposed to simply hitting the remove colour button. [This process makes it look] like it was composed by a professional still photographer.
“For us, removing the colour in some way increases the reality, feeling almost like a documentary and making audiences feel that Godzilla actually exists. [This version of the film is] way scarier than Godzilla Minus One with colour, even the team members working on it, we’d get goosebumps…Because, in many ways, it does feel like a different film.”
The colour version of Godzilla Minus One is streaming on Netflix in Ireland, the UK and the US right now.
Godzilla Minus One / Minus Color will drop on the service on 1 August.
