It has been 20 years since we first – and last – saw their misadventures on screen in Trainspotting.
And judging by these pictures, it’s fair to say the years have been kind to Mark Renton (“Rent Boy”) and Simon Williamson (“Sick Boy”).
The long-rumoured, long-gestating sequel to the 1996 British classic – titled T2 – is currently filming in Scotland, and photographer Katielee Arrowsmith managed to take these shots of stars Ewan McGregor (Renton) and Jonny Lee Miller (Sick Boy) on set with director Danny Boyle, and shared them on Twitter.
See how grown-up and responsible they look? Well, at least compared to this:

Good to see Lee Miller is still rockin’ the blond look, though.
We’ve already been told that T2, which is inspired by Irvine Welsh’s novel Porno, will be set 20 years after the events of the original film. Welsh revealed that in an interview with Vice, and also said:
“John [Hodge] has delivered this knockout script, which is absolutely fantastic. It’s based on Porno, but it’s also evolved. We’ve had to evolve past that, because the actors would have been ten years older when Porno came out, and now they’re 20 years older. It has to take into account that reality. It’s very much telling a story about Edinburgh as it currently is.”
He added this message for all of us who might be concerned that a sequel couldn’t possibly live up to the original:
“It’s going to be incredible. It’s a very beautiful, brilliant script – and it needed to be; I don’t think any of us would have wanted to be involved in something that wasn’t going to live up to the first film. That’s the danger with any sequel, but especially this one and after such a long period of time.”
Enough people were certainly excited enough about T2 to want to actually be in it. As we reported last week, Edinburgh nightclub Cav recently put out a call on its Facebook page, looking for extras for an upcoming nightclub scene for the movie. They were looking for people between the ages of 18 – 30 years old to attend the shoot on June 14 in their best ’80s gear (indicating that it will be a flashback sequence).
Boyle and the cast – including McGregor, Lee Miller, Robert Carlyle (Begbie), and Ewen Bremner (Spud) will all be in attendance, but it will be all business and a strictly alcohol-free affair.
Alas, they have everyone they need and no more applications will be taken.
T2 is scheduled to be released here on January 27, 2017.
