One of TV’s greatest mysteries has been solved.
We’re confident in saying that some of you will know the interiors of the apartments from Friends better than your own homes. After all, who didn’t want to sit with Joey and Chandler when they spent an entire day watching TV on their barcaloungers?
We’ve also frequently wanted to drop into chef Monica’s spacious two-bedroom apartment in the West Village for the same reason that Joey does – to raid her fridge.
If you ever wondered what it would cost to live with the best neighbours imaginable, then you won’t be surprised to learn that it’s pretty pricey.
On the show, the gang resided at 90 Bedford St. near Grove Street, and the last apartment that was up for sale in the area, a one-bed and one-bathroom, went for $2,950 (£2,100) a month
Granted that’s steep, but a similarly-sized pad to Monica/Rachel’s apartment is even more expensive – a two-bedroom property in that area went for $3,400 (£2,300).
The New York Post  has crunched the numbers and discovered that given their various jobs, Rachel, Monica, Joey and Chandler would never have consistently been able to afford the rent that they were paying in the show.
These real life prices don’t even offer a fair reflection of the value of the Friends apartments though, as Monica’s terrace alone would see the price rise.
The Citi Habitats’ March 2016 rental report has discovered that the West Village’s average two-bedroom rent is $4,030 (£2,800). With this in mind, it’s safe to say that, today, it would cost over $4,000/month for Monica and Rachel’s place, and in the high $3,000s (over £2,100) for Chandler and Joey’s.
Though, to be fair, none of these figures are likely to shock London renters. No, really.
Still, here’s hoping that the apartments are fully furnished and that you’re left with the five of spades.
