Here’s the first footage of Lara Croft kicking ass in the new Tomb Raider film

Paul Moore

She’s back.

You’ve probably spent months playing the seminal Playstation game Tomb Raider when it was first released inĀ 1996 because just like Goldeneye or Super Mario 64, Lara Croft’s adventures were revolutionary.

This being said, the films which starred Angelina Jolie as the female archaeologist were pretty so-so.

Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl, Jason Bourne, Ex Machina) is the latest actressĀ to take on the role and as we’ve already seen, she’s more than up to itsĀ physical demands.

The new Tomb Raider film promises to be an origin story and speaking with EW, Vikander Ā said that her take on Lara Croft will have “all the fierce, tough, curious, intelligent traits. But we’ve stripped away all of her experience. She hasn’t gone on an adventure just yet.”

In Roar Uthaug’sĀ film,Ā Lara sets out on her first expedition to finish her father’s archaeological research and uncover ancient secrets in order to clear his disgraced name.

Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent, and takes college courses, rarely making it to class.

Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father’s global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he’s truly gone. Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can’t understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death.

Going explicitly against his final wishes, she leaves everything she knows behind in search of her dad’s last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan. But her mission will not be an easy one; just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous.

The first teaser trailer has just been released – the full footage lands tomorrow – and it appears thatĀ Vikander Ā has really nailed the physical aspect of the character.

Tomb Raider is released in cinemas on March 16th.

Walton Goggins,Ā Daniel Wu, andĀ Dominic West all co-star.
