The ‘reimagining’ drops on Disney+ November 12
It may be the remake no one asked for but whether you like it or not, Disney is rebooting the Home Alone series. Safe to say, plenty of people are already not too happy about it.
Home Sweet Home Alone – which will technically be the sixth film in the franchise – is due to get a streaming-only release next month, meaning you can only watch it if you’re a Disney+ subscriber. Cue all the people taking out a free trial – whether for curiosity or just to hate-watch.
You can the first official trailer here:
As you can see in the trailer, we’ve got a whole new Kevin to get used to – well, he’s called Max in this one – and he’s played by Archie Yates, who you might recognise from 2019’s Jojo Rabbit – as well as Irish comedian and actress, Aisling Bea, who plays the mum who (spoilers?) leaves her son all alone at home.
In addition to the new family, we also get a modern take on everyone’s beloved burglars, who are played here by comic actors Rob Delaney (Deadpool 2, Catastrophe) and Ellie Kemper (The US Office, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt). They may not be the ‘Wet Bandits’ but we’ll give them a chance – for now at least.
Oh, and in case you didn’t spot him, yes, the original Buzz McCallister (Devin Ratray) is in it: he’s the cop wearing the jacket that says ‘McCallister’ on it. Nice touch.

Others seem to at least have a bit more reality about the situation and admit that they, like us, are most certainly going to watch it whether it’s good or not.
I’m all for nostalgia but I’m not sure about this one. I will probably still give it a watch for curious sake. However I’m not going in expecting much so it won’t be much of a letdown ??♀️

Aside from the admittedly amusing cameo from Buzz in the trailer, one thing that we do hope is that we also get an appearance from the OG himself, Macaulay Culkin, who has been widely rumoured to be popping up in Home Sweet Home Alone. After the Buzz reveal, we already know this is part of canon – so just give us what we want, Disney.
It may not be the John Hughes Christmas classic we all know and love but like a paint can being chucked down a stairway – it’s coming whether you like or not. It feels like they’re remaking all of our old favourites at the minute but – don’t forget: it doesn’t stop you from sticking on the original.
Home Sweet Home Alone is out on November 12 only on Disney+.
