The film would make perfect viewing ahead of Halloween.
Prime Video has quietly added Immaculate, the much-discussed and very good 2024 horror movie produced by and starring Sydney Sweeney (Anyone But You, Euphoria).
In the film, the rising star plays Sister Cecilia, an American nun of devout faith who joins a remote convent in the picturesque Italian countryside.
Her warm welcome quickly devolves into a nightmare when she discovers that she is pregnant despite being a virgin.
While her convent’s inhabitants begin to treat her as the next Virgin Mary, Cecilia suspects something incredibly sinister is afoot.
Released in Irish cinemas last March, Immaculate saw Sweeney re-teaming with director Michael Mohan after their excellent, underrated Prime Video thriller The Voyeurs.
And thanks to Sweeney’s viscerally intense lead turn, the film’s beautifully gloomy cinematography, its social commentary and its brilliantly berserk third act where the story reaches full fever pitch, the religious horror was a decent hit both with critics and audiences.
And for fans of the horror genre, Immaculate makes a nice thematic trilogy with other 2024 horrors The First Omen (streaming on Disney+) and Apartment 7A (streaming on Paramount+).
You can read some of the glowing reviews for the Sweeney flick right here:
The Atlantic: “Immaculate, a horror film set in a convent, is a Sweeney showcase in the smartest possible way, devoting much of its running time to her wide-eyed, trembling visage as she encounters all kinds of demonic nastiness.”
HeyUGuys: “This is Sweeney’s ballsiest move yet and a must-watch for fans of intelligent horror. With its blend of campy thrills and social commentary, it proves to be a standout addition to the genre, anchored by Sydney Sweeney’s simply divine performance.”
Los Angeles Times: “Mohan, for his part, films with a great sense of space and frequently presents us with images that remain on the retina.”
Kermode and Mayo’s Take: “It becomes this weirdly, timely kind of inversion of Rosemary’s Baby… and then it starts to get really interesting, far more interesting than I expected.”
Radio Times: “There are some terrific moments, none more so than the magnificently deranged climax, which is so well-executed, it makes the whole film worthwhile.”
Time Magazine: “The movie’s shockeroo ending made me wince, and it made me laugh. It’s bad-gal blasphemy of the highest order.”
Immaculate is streaming on Prime Video in Ireland and the UK right now.
