James Franco shut out of Oscars in shock move

James Dawson

He was not nominated in the ‘Best Actor’ category.

Despite having won the Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Awards for Best Actor, James Franco was not nominated for an Oscar in a surprise decision by the Academy.

The 39-year-old actor failed to receive the nod for his leading role in The Disaster Artist, with Gary Oldman, Timothee Chalamet, Daniel Day-Lewis, Daniel Kaluuya and Denzel Washington, instead being put forward.

It comes following five women accusing Franco of sexual misconduct after he chose to wear a Times Up pin – a sign of the campaign against sexual misconduct within Hollywood – at the Golden Globes.

Speaking out, Actress Violet Paley took to Twitter to allege he once exposed himself to her and asked her 17-year-old friend back to a hotel room.

Another actress, Sarah Tither-Kaplan, also commented on Franco’s pin, reminding him of an incident in his acting classes where he asked her to do nude scenes for minimum pay.

As voting for nominations begins in late December, it is unclear whether these allegations played a part in the Oscars snub, as similar claims have failed to affect nominations in the past.

Back in 2003, for instance, Kobe Bryant was nominated for Best Animated Short for Dear Basketball, despite having been accused of rape. The incident was later settled in a civil suit with the woman for a reported $5 million (£3.56m).
