Jeremy Corbyn is set to appear on the Pyramid stage at this year’s Glastonbury. And no, of course he’s not singing.
The Labour leader, who had to cancel a similar appearance at last year’s festival due to the European Referendum, will speak to crowds during the Saturday afternoon.
According to the Guardian, Corbyn will be joined on stage by Michael Eavis, the 81-year-old founder of the festival. After addressing festival-goers, he will then introduce Run the Jewels, a US rap duo known for their lyrics which touch on social issues.
“We’re Corbyn fans, that’s the thing,” Eavis said, while speaking to the Guardian at the Glastonbury site recently. “He’s got something new and precious, and people are excited about it. He really is the hero of the hour.”
Eavis’ daughter Emily, who is now in charge of much of Glastonbury’s operation, also spoke positively of Corbyn. “It’s great to see somebody who’s engaging young people so much,” she said.
“It’s been a really full-on few years, culminating in Brexit and Trump.
“It felt like the whole world was shifting dramatically to the right.
“I think that this is a breath of fresh air – people are like, ‘No, enough, we’re not going to let it happen.'”
Run the Jewels are scheduled to take to the Pyramid stage at 4.15pm on 24 June, with Corbyn appearing shortly beforehand. Following a General Election campaign in which he attracted a surge of youth votes, Corbyn is likely to receive a warm welcome from the majority of those in attendance.
