JOE went to Glastonbury and loved it – here are our highlights

Lia Nicholls

As we return to from Glastonbury broken and bruised and join the road to recovery, now is the time to reflect and recapture all the brilliant moments from a hazy weekend.

Worthy Farm is where memories are made and minds are lost. Each year we return to trek miles across muddy fields singing and bubbling with excitement as we go collecting new experiences to pop into our Glastonbury treasure chest.

Here are a few I collected this year…

– There’s only one festival on earth where the Dalai Lama would agree to visit, let alone appear on stage with Patti Smith. After the spiritual leader shared his wisdom at The Stone Circle, he joined Patti on the Pyramid stage where we all sang his Holiness ‘Happy Birthday’ to honour his 80th. It was a wonderful moment.

FKA Twigs and her extraordinary moves. Tahliah Barnett from Gloucestershire pulled in a huge crowd when she performed on West Holts, which I’m grateful I got to see. Best to leave the dancing to her though, I pulled a muscle trying to emulate her shapes.

– Two days after she took charge of the Pyramid stage with her band Florence + The Machine, Florence Welch was still bounding around like Worthy Farm like it was her own garden. She’s a wonderful force of nature, whose energy I’d like to bottle up and take with me to the office this week.

– From start to finish, Super Furry Animals were brilliant performing at The Park. Chanting Juxtapozed (With U) long into the night, it became the the song of the weekend.

– Witnessing Kanye West rap over us in a cherry picker (proving his ego has reached new heights) was another highlight – although “the biggest rock star ever”, I’m not so sure.

– Whenever you’re tempted to throw in the towel, head to the Healing Field. It saved me on Sunday…

– Festival-goers who can be bothered to dress up like this

And this…

– Trekking across the site is made so much easier thanks to the weird and wonderful art on display…

And giant mechanical spiders that shoot out flames…

– And let’s not forget the pond art…

glasto8

– One of my favourite places in the world, The Park, with its psychedelic ribbon tower

– A little lie down in EE’s 4G Garden is always a welcome break amidst the chaos, especially when you stumble across Django Django playing an acoustic set. The Staves, Rio Ferdinand, Nick Grimshaw and Ella Eyre (all below) were just a few of the famous faces enjoying the spongy lawn…

– I bumped into Kate Tempest after she played The Park stage, where she delivered this amazing speech. Kate Tempest for Prime Minister!

Partying with The Maccabees after they played The Other stage – they’re a lovely bunch and here’s singer Felix White and my friend and landlady Sarah Orme…

Foul-mouthed and badly behaved Fat White Family proved they’re the biggest caners of the festival with their debauched set on The Park stage. We even got to see Lias Saoudi’s pocket rocket…

– The folk at Water Aid who keep us hydrated with free water, like the lovely Roger…

glasto30

– The very many pit-stops for Tuborg, Glastonbury’s beer sponsor, at Williams Green…

Williams-Green-Sign8

– Trekking to see John Lennon reincarnated with The Bootleg Beatles, no wonder the place was packed…

bootlegbeatles

– Education in the toilets, “thanks for giving a s**t“…

glasto26

– Getting the chance to have a bath the wonderful Lower Coxbridge House. If you fancy some yoga in an oasis of calm or seeing one of the headliners in the back garden, this is the place to visit…

– Michael Eavis signing off with “this is the best year yet“, which he said last year and the year before that, oh and the year before that…still, we’ll let him off.

Until next year Glastonbury!
