Johnny Depp: ‘I don’t want to win an Oscar’

There’s plenty of Oscar buzz around Johnny Depp’s portrayal of mobster Whitey Bulger in Black Mass, but the actor claims he doesn’t fancy one.

Talking to the BBC at the London Film Festival premiere of his new gangster flick, the star explained that winning an Academy Award isn’t something he’s interested in.

“I don’t want to win one of those things ever, you know,” said Depp. “I don’t want to have to talk…”

As well as the burden of the requisite acceptance speech, the thespian isn’t enamoured by the idea of competing with his Tinseltown peers.

“The idea of winning means that you’re in competition with someone, and I’m not in competition with anybody.”

“They gave me one of those things, like a nomination, two or three times,” Depp continued. “A nomination is plenty.”

If Depp’s name is one day read out from a golden envelope on Oscar night, he can always follow the example of Marlon Brando and get someone to collect his statue…
