YES, Idris
Idris Elba has confirmed that filming on the Luther movie will begin this year.
The actor, who played DCI John Luther in the incredibly popular BBC show, said this month that after a long delay, filming on the project will officially begin later this year.
Chatting with MistaJam at the All-New Capital Weekender, Idris said that he plans to spend 2021 making more music… And Luther: The Movie.
“I’m super excited and I hope the fans are sort of excited for that” he said. “It’s been a long time coming for a movie, for people that have loved the show. We’ve been making the show for 10 years, so we’re making a film.”
Elba first confirmed that a Luther movie was, indeed, happening during last year’s BAFTAs. He said: “I’ve maintained I’d like to see it come to a film.
“And that is where I think we are heading towards – a film. And I’m looking forward to making that happen. It is happening.
“With film, the sky’s the limit. You can be a little bit more bold with the storylines, and a little bit more international, and a little more up the scale. But John is always going to be John Luther.”
Luther officially came to an end in 2019 after nearly a decade on the air. The psychological crime drama proved massively popular with audiences and critics alike, bagging itself 11 Emmy nominations over the years.
Elba himself has also been awarded a Critics’ Choice Television Award, a Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Award for his performance in the series.
The actor first teased the possibility of a Luther film a few years back, saying: “For me it would be nice to take Luther up a scale. Make the storyline bigger, make it slightly more international.”
There’s been no word as of yet as to when the movie will be landing on cinema screens, but we’re going to be cautiously optimistic for a 2022 release.
