Turns out, he’s not ‘too old for this sh*t’
Riggs and Murtaugh are officially being reunited as Mel Gibson has confirmed that his screen partner for more than a decade, Danny Glover, will be returning for Lethal Weapon 5.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Gibson confirmed that not only are the rumours about him directing the fifth film true but that Glover will be taking one last turn to star alongside him.
The 66-year-old said that his 75-year-old counterpart is very much going to be “the show-pony” in this fourth sequel.
With the film also celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, Gibson also revealed how he never intended to take charge of the fifth instalment and would have loved for the quadrilogy’s original filmmaker, Richard Donner, to return to the helm.
However, The Goonies, Lost Boys, Superman, Free Willy, and X-Men director passed away in July 2021 at the age of 91 and asked Gibson: “Hey, kid, if I don’t make it you’ll take the reins, huh?”. Now an experienced director himself, Gibson says it’s “an honour for me to carry the flag for him”.
While excitement for the series returning is certainly palpable – despite the middling TV adaptation being cancelled before its fourth season – Gibson’s reputation in Hollywood over the last couple of decades has led many to question not only how he can continue to star in movies but direct entire productions.
The Passion of the Christ director has been accused of antisemitism, sexism, domestic abuse, not to mention multiple criminal charges. However, his record has been wiped clean on at least one occasion, and insists he has “never discriminated against anyone“.
