“I see a darkness in you. And in that darkness, eyes staring back at me. Brown eyes, blue eyes, green eyes. Eyes sealed shut forever. We will meet again”
Now we’ve had the time to allow the dust to settle on the third episode of the eighth season of Game of Thrones, to assess the hard yards and dodgy performances put-in by the show’s characters and recap any moments we might have missed, attention turns towards the remaining three episodes in the show’s run.
As per usual, the lads over on Reddit are running riot in the wake of the season’s most epic episode so far and, as has now become tradition, for many of them it is a question of looking back onto the series’ canon before they are able to make predictions on what is to come.
She might not have always been among the show’s most virtuous – given her burning the child, trying to seduce Gendry, etc – but it’s fair to say that Melisandre went some way to redeeming herself in her final episode. And, although she accepted death at the episode’s climax, her words may still provide a clue on what is to come in the show.
A quote in the third season from Arya Stark’s first meeting with the Red Woman, has drawn particular attention, as it may well have held a deeper meaning than was initially thought. The quote was referenced in S08E03 when the pair briefly spoke.
“You said we’d meet again,” Arya told Melisandre. “You said I’d shut many eyes forever. You were right about that, too.”
To which the Red Priestess replied: “Brown eyes, green eyes – and blue eyes.”
This was a throwback to when Melisandre told the then Stark child: “I see a darkness in you. And in that darkness, eyes staring back at me. Brown eyes, blue eyes, green eyes. Eyes sealed shut forever. We will meet again.”

It has long been assumed that the quoting was the writer’s way of foreshadowing the people Arya would murder. The blue eyes now clearly represented the Night King, which just leaves the question of whose the other eyes are.
The brown eyes may well refer to somebody who has already been killed, Walder Frey – who was murdered by Arya along with every male member of his house – had brown eye, as did Meryn Trant.
But, as for the green eyes, with only one villain remaining in the show, it’s very likely that the green eyes refer to Cersei Lannister, who has long been at the top of Arya’s kill list for what she did to her father Ned.
As with all predictions, though, we’ll just have to see how it all pans out in the coming weeks.
