What would 2016 have been without Eric Monkman? The worst year EVER, that’s what.
The shouty Canadian, studying for a masters in economics at Wolfson College, Cambridge, won the hearts of a nation when he first appeared on University Challenge a couple of months ago.
And on the evening of Monday, December 5, our hero returned.
Once again, Monkman guided his team to another victory (of course he bloody well did – he’s Monkman), but it wasn’t quite a perfect performance for him, having got a few of his questions wrong.
Every time Jeremy Paxman informed him that he’d answered incorrectly, Monkman couldn’t disguise the expression of crushing disappointment that spread across his face.
Just look how much it means to him.

But fear not, Monkman. It’ll take far more than a few incorrect answers to change our feelings towards you.
Undeniably one of the stars of 2016. We look forward to his next appearance.
