Narcos returns on 16 November. This looks amazing.
“The King is dead, long live the King!”
After the demise of Pablo Escobar in Season 2 of Narcos, the creators of the show took a bold risk by focusing the third season on the exploits of the Cali Cartel. Truth be told, it paid off.
Aside from continuing the gripping story, the decision to introduce new characters and broaden the war on drugs was inspired.
For example, Pacho Herrera was such a complex and well-created character. There were moments when Alberto Ammann rivalled some of Wagner Moura’s best work as El Patron (Escobar).
This season, Narcos: Mexico is doubling down on its A-list talent because the brilliant duo of Diego Luna (The Terminal, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and Michael Pena (Ant-Man, End of Watch) are stepping into the lead roles.
Of course, we’re sad to see Pedro Pascal (Javier Peña) leave the show but we’re extremely encouraged from what we’ve seen so far.
In terms of the plot, Narcos: Mexico will explore the origins of the modern drug war by going back to its roots, beginning at a time when the Mexican trafficking world was a loose and disorganised confederation of independent growers and dealers.
Viewers will witness the rise of the Guadalajara Cartel in the 1980s as Félix Gallardo (Diego Luna) takes the helm, unifying traffickers in order to build an empire. When DEA agent Kiki Camarena (Michael Peña) moves his wife and young son from California to Guadalajara to take on a new post, he quickly learns that his assignment will be more challenging than he ever could have imagined.
As Kiki garners intelligence on Félix and becomes more entangled in his mission, a tragic chain of events unfold, affecting the drug trade and the war against it for years to come.
In the latest trailer, it’s clear that Narcos has upped the action stakes because there’s a strong Scarface vibe to this one.
