Prepare to have your mind absolutely f***ed

You might not have heard of Neon Genesis Evangelion – but it is one of the most influential and important Japanese animated shows of all time.

The series is a cult hit in the West, but for many years it remained unavailable in the English speaking world. The DVDs were long out of print, and commanded high prices on the second hand market.

Now Netflix have announced that they have obtained the worldwide rights to stream the show, making it available to a whole new generation of fans.

It will be available to stream from Spring 2019.

Neon Genesis Evangelion first aired between 1995 and 1996. Set in a world ravaged by mysterious giant beings known as ‘Angels’, it focuses on teen mecha pilot Shinji Ikari, and humanity’s battle to stay alive.

While it may look like a generic giant robot series, Neon Genesis Evangelion is far, far more. It is known for its bleak, cynical worldview, religious imagery, and absolutely mindbending plot developments.

The official synopsis from Netflix reads:

A.D. 2015. Tokyo 3 is under attack by powerful creatures known as the Angels. The protagonist, Shinji Ikari, is chosen to pilot the Humanoid Decisive Weapon Evangelion — the only way for humanity to fight against the Angels. The battle for the fate of humanity starts now. What exactly are the Angels? What fate awaits the young pilots and humanity itself?

Though in all, honesty, that description barely scratches the surface.

It also has one of the most controversial endings in the history of television, as well as catchy-as-hell theme tune that you will be humming for months.

Neon Genesis Evangelion regularily tops lists of the best anime ever, and was also a big influence on the Pacific Rim movies.

Netflix will also be streaming two follow up movies, Evangelion: Death True² and The End of Evangelion.
